Having majored in both Education Studies and Literary Arts at Brown University, I've had lots of opportunities to explore and practice the teaching of both academic and creative writing. I served as a university Writing Fellow for two years, providing one-on-one help with academic writing to undergrads, and I also helped create and run a workshop on the basics of academic writing. In addition, I taught a semester-long creative writing workshop to 8th graders at a Providence, RI middle school, and worked as a general academic tutor to a 5th grader in the Providence area.

In addition to my formal teaching experience, I also spent lots of time in classrooms as part of my own coursework. I worked as a participant observer in English classrooms from 6th grade through 12th grade, and studied the theory and methodology of teaching writing in several courses. During the course of my own creative writing classes, I also spent lots of time working collaboratively with my peers on improving our writing.

I'm comfortable working on reading and writing projects with students of any age--as well as general homework for the younger grades--and I'm looking forward to sharing my love of writing with SmartFamilies!
